Three days in Liverpool

Non avevo mai pensato di visitare Liverpool prima di avere l’opportunità di andarci. Quando pensavo a Liverpool la collegavo solo ai Reds, la famosa squadra di calcio e in effetti lo stadio di Anfield è sicuramente una delle mete più gettonate!

Ovviamente Liverpool è molto più di questo ed anche se il mio soggiorno è durato solo tre giorni ho avuto modo di scoprire i suoi principali punti di interesse. Ma andiamo con ordine. Liverpool ha un aeroporto abbastanza collegato alle maggiori città italiane ma trovandomi a Londra ho preso il treno della Virgin. Prenotando online si possono trovare delle offerte molto interessanti e raggiungere Liverpool in 2 ore e 20 minuti con poco più di 32£. Se,invece, preferite prendere l’ autobus spenderete di meno ma impiegherete 6 ore. Partendo dalla stazione dei treni di Euston (Northern line) siamo arrivati alla stazione di LIME STREET.  Abbiamo soggiornato in un hotel ottimo per gli standard inglesi, The Podworks Hotel, spendendo poco più di 100£ per due notti. Liverpool è piena di buoni ostelli quindi se vi va di fare un ‘esperienza differente questa è la città giusta.  

I have never thought about visiting Liverpool before having the chance to go there.Thanks to the biggest Liverpool FC supporters Debora and Gabriele I went there and I discovered a very beautiful city. Liverpool means the famous football team, Beatles and Titanic.

In Liverpool there is the airport but I went there by train leaving from London Euston. There are a lot of discounts if you buy your ticket online on the Virgin website, more or less 32£ to go and to come back. There are a lot of hostels in Liverpool if you want to have a different experience but we stay in a really nice Hotel, The Podworks Hotel. Simple, comfortable and cheap (100£ for 2 nights).

 

Gli Scousers ovvero i cittadini di Liverpool sono molto cordiali ed accoglienti. Devo dire  che il loro inglese è molto diverso da quello di Londra ma è un piacere per me conoscere nuove varianti della lingua. Ma passiamo alle principali attrazioni di Liverpool.  La città è sicuramente la mecca di tutti i fan dei Beatles, non c’è luogo che non abbia un collegamento con la  band. Pur non essendo una grandissima fan dei Beatles non potevo non visitare il museo a loro dedicato, The Beatles Story, di cui vi parlerò nel mio prossimo post.

The citizens of Liverpool are called the Scousers and really kind and friendly even if the speak a differen English from the one I know but I like discovering new variations of the English language. Liverpool is the city of the famous revolutionary band The Bealtes and you must visit the Beatles Story. (Follow my next article to know more about this museum).

Liverpool è sul mare, infatti vi è la famosa spiaggia di Crosby ma è anche attraversata da un fiume molto grande, il Merseyriver. Il porto di Liverpool è Patrimonio dell’UNESCO dal 2014. L’Albert Dock racchiude tutti i musei più importanti tra cui quello dei Beatles, il Merseyside Maritime Museum ed il Museo di Liverpool (Del Merseyside Maritime Museum e della sua mostra dedicata al Titanic ve ne parlerò nei prossimi post). 

Liverpool is a very beautiful city with the sea (there is the Crosby beach) and with the big Mersey river. The harbour in Liverpool is really beautiful and there are all the most important museums of the city like the Mersey Maritme Museum where there is a temporary exhibition about the Titanic (follow my next articles to know more about this). The harbour of Liverpool is UNESCO heritage since 2014.

Io vi consiglio di fare una bella passeggiata lungo il fiume arrivando alle cosiddette Tre Grazie ovvero i tre edifici più importanti della città tra cui il famoso Liver Building. Il Liver bird è il simbolo della città,  sull’edificio ve ne sono due, uno guarda verso la città e l’altro verso il mare cosí da poter difendere Liverpool. Si pensa infatti che se mai dovessero cadere di conseguenza cadrebbe tutta la città.  Io conoscevo benissimo questo simbolo perché ovviamente è anche quello della squadra del Liverpool ma girovagando per la città ho scoperto anche un altro simbolo denominato Superlambanana, un incrocio tra un agnello e una banana, una scultura dell’artista giapponese Taro Chiezo che fa riferimento alla storia di Liverpool ed alla sua attività mercantile. Nel 2008 sono state create delle repliche e sono state sparse per tutta la città.  Alcune si trovano proprio in prossimità del Liver building.  

I suggest you to have a walk along the river side reaching the Three Graces, the three most important buildings in Liverpool. There is the Liver Building with two towers and at the top of them there are two liver birds that are the symbol of the city. One looks at the sea and the other at the city to protect Liverpool. And if they fall, the city will fall too. There is also another symbol that I’ve discovered going around the city the Lambanana. A Japanese artist created a sculpture that is a mix between a lamb and a banana. This recalls the history of Liverpool made of lams and bananas, goods that crowded the ships at the Harbour.

Il centro di Liverpool si può tranquillamente girare a piedi ed è un a delle cose che maggiormente  mi è piaciuta. Agli estremi di Hope Street troviamo le due chiese di Liverpool, quella anglicana e quella cattolica, ed è come se entrambe cercassero di imporsi sulla città.  Si possono visitare entrambe gratuitamente. La prima è la cattedrale di Liverpool, molto cupa, imponente ed una delle più belle del mondo. Fu realizzata a partire dal 1900 dall’architetto Giles Gilbert Scott colui che ha realizzato la famosa cabina telefonica rossa simbolo dell’UK . Fu terminata solo nel 1978. La seconda è la chiesa cattolica dedicata a Cristo Re. Esternamente può essere paragonata ad una fabbrica, ad un’astronave o ad una discoteca. La pianta è circolare e stupisce la sua forma conica sormontata da una specie di corona che richiama quella di spine di Cristo. Trovandosi ad Upper Duke Street (proprio accanto alla chiesa anglicana) ci si imbatte nel quartiere cinese di Liverpool che è davvero molto grande.

One of the things I like of Liverpool is the fact you can go around without taking means of transport. The city center is small and rich of culture. There is also a huge China district. Then in Hope street there are two churces one Catholic and the other Anglican. The first one called the Metropolitan Church looks like a disco or a space ship and the top recalls the crown of spines of Jesus Christ. In the opposite side there is the Cathedral of Liverpool that is completely different from the other one. It is not so old and the style is Gothic. The architect was Giles Gilbert Scott who invented the famous red cabin the symbol of England.

Ed ecco a voi alcuni consigli su dove mangiare a Liverpool. Due sono i piatti principali da dover assaggiare, la Scouse (manzo stufato con verdure e patate) e il fish and chips.  Un pub tipico in cui poter assaggiare entrambe le cose ad un ottimo prezzo è “Ship and Mitre” che si trova su Dale Street, sempre nei pressi del centro della città.  Sono rimasta colpita dall’atmosfera che si respira in questo luogo e dal cibo davvero ottimo (7£ la Scouse e 8£ il fish and chips). Un altro posto che vi consiglio per assaggiare fish and chips e altre pietanze a base di pesce è “Fish and chips Docklands” proprio accanto alla Tate. Se invece preferite sandwich e bagels vi consiglio Lox and Caper su Hanover Street. Prezzi ottimi e cibo squisito (bagel con zucca e hummus a 3,95£). Se desiderate assaggiare la tipica colazione all’inglese allora dovete assolutamente andare da The Hub (su Hannover Street), ottimi prezzi (6,50£ la colazione inglese) ed ottimi piatti. Ci sono anche i pancakes con i frutti di bosco e la colazione per i vegetariani. Inoltre, potrete anche venirci a pranzo e cena.

Here you are some restaurants where you can go to eat in Liverpool. There are two typical dishes that you must try: the Scouse (stew with potatoes) and Fish and Chips. There is a delicious and typical pub in Dale Street, Ship and Mitre. There is the typical atmosphere of an English pub. You can drink beer and eat delicious dishes (7£ the Scouse and 8£ Fish and Chips). If you would like to eat Fish and Chips by the riverside there is Fish and Chips Docklands. If you prefer sandwiches and bagels there is a lovely place in Hanover Street called Lox and caper (bagel with hummus and squash 3,95£). To taste the typical English breakfast, even the vegetarian version, The Hub is the best place to go. Good prices and delicious dishes. You can also eat pancakes and go there to have lunch or dinner.
