The view from the Shard

My ideal city has always been the one with a lot of skyscrapers that stand out in the skyline. I have always dreamt of New York even for this reason but living in London I have discoverd how the skyline of this city has changed in the last 20 years. When I came for the first time the only innovative structure was the Millennium Dome, then I discovered the Gherkin, the Walkie Talkie with its Sky Garden and then the Shard that was inaugurated in 2012. I think that the view of London with both the historical building and the new modern ones is more than perfect!

The idea of Irvine Sellar, The Shard’s developer was to create a vertical society over the river Thames that emerged from the river. He woudl like to create a vertical city with hotel, offices, shops, apartments and he did it. But it is also a beautiful place where you can go to enjoy the view of London.

The architect is Renzo Piano. He was inspired by the spires of London churces. The shape is pyramidal. On the ground floor there is a direct connection with the tube and on the first floors there are restaurants and bar. In the middle there is a luxury hotel and above the residences. On the 69^th and on the 72^nd there is the gallery where you can enjoy the view of London. This is the Uk’s highest public viewing gallery, 240 m above the street.The peak of the Shard disappeares in the sky or most of the time in the clouds and it is really spectacular more than the view you can see from the top of the building. When I saw it for the first time I was amazed by its structure. The Shard gives you the idea of lightness and transparency the one Piano wanted to give to the building. Another great feature of the skyscraper is that its colours change accord to the weather and the light of the city because it’s made of a glass surface. This means that that it requires a particular techincal solution to ensure the facade’s performance to control light and heat. It has a double-skin. The second one is a ventilated facade with internal blinds that respond automatically to changes in light and heat.

I visited the Shard two times. The first one was when the weather was typically British and the second one when the weather was better. Even if there were clouds and rain the view was really great but except the landscape the Shard itself is so particular and you must visit it if you are in London. It’s incredible that this kind of structure of 72 floors emerges from the ground and stands out agains the city. I think it’s the most beautiful skyscraper of the English capital. But I prefer the view from the others skyscrapers maybe because on the top of the others you can also look at the Shard that sticks out among the other buildings of London. From the Shard you can admire all the most important symbols of the city as St. Paul Cathedral (that it’s not far from the Shard), the Big Bang, the London Eye, the London Bridge, Canary Wharf. The weather is not always good to let you see everything but as I told you before the Shard deserves your visit.

In the ticket is included an audioguide that let you discover more about its costruction and also some peculiarity of the districts that you can see from the top. Do you know that all the glass surface is cleaned by peolpe who during the year do the hardest job? I am talking about the men who every day from the bottom to the top clean the glass surface of the Shard. They are also a kind of attraction for the tourist that during their visit bump into them.

La mia città ideale è sempre stata quella caratterizzata da alti grattacieli che svettano tra i palazzi. Forse è questo uno dei motivi per il quale New Yok è sempre stata la mia città dei sogni. Ma devo dire che vivendo a Londra ho scoperto anche i suoi di grattacieli. Ci sono stata diverse volte ed ho visto cambiare il paesaggio di questa città inglese. La prima volta nel 2000 vi erano ancora pochi edifici davvero alti e paragonabili a quelli della grande mela. La grande novità all’epoca era il Millennium Dome. Poi c’è stato il Cetriolone (the Gherkin), il Walkie talkie (con il suo Sky Garden) fino ad arrivare al 2012 e all’inaugurazione del grattacielo più grande di tutta l’Inghilterra, lo Shard.

L’idea di Irvine Sellar era quella di creare una città verticale, un grattacielo che non contenesse solo uffici ma una vera e propria società. Con la metro, fermata London Brige della Jubilee Line, si arriva direttamente all’entrata dell’edificio. I primi piani sono riservati a bar e ristoranti, la parte centrale alle residenze e gli ultimi ad una galleria che affaccia direttamente sulla città di Londra, a 240 m d’altezza. Lo Shard, anche detto la scheggia per gli italiani, è come se emergesse direttamente dal Tamigi. Una struttura che si erige imponente ed elegante su tutti gli altri edifici moderni e non della città di Londra.

L’architetto che ha ideato lo Shard è Renzo Piano. Ha costruito un grattacielo completamente in vetro. Il suo colore cambia a seconda del tempo meteorologico, delle stagioni, della presenza o meno del sole. È stato creato apposta per dare l’idea di versatilità, di leggerezza e di trasparenza. Raggiungere il 72esimo piano è come raggiungere il cielo. La punta dello Shard è come se scomparisse nel cielo o il più delle volte tra le nuvole che sosvrastano Londra.

Ho visitato lo Shard due volte. La prima è stata caratterizzata da un tipico tempo inglese che ha reso un pò meno interessante la vista. Infatti da qui, quando il tempo è favorevole, si possono ammirare tutti i punti di interesse più importanti e i simboli della città come il Big Bang, la London Eye, il Tower Bridge e la vicina St. Paul Cathedral. In ogni caso devo dire che più che la vista della città è interessante la struttura dello Shard, le sue peculiarità che lo rendono un edificio importantissimo e particolare nel suo genere. L’audioguida che viene fornita, compresa nel costo del biglietto, ti da la possibilità di comprendere più nel dettaglio le carattetistiche del grattacielo e anche alcune curiosità relative alle zone della città che si possono ammirare dall’alto. Ad esempio, lo sapevate che esisono degli impiegati che ogni giorno si preoccupano di rendere splendente la superficie di vetro dello Shard? Ebbene si, lo puliscono dal basso verso l’alto e incontrarli durante le loro ore lavorative è quasi diventata un’attrazione per tutti i turisti che si divertono a scattare fotografie. Nonostante il paesaggio dalla vetta dello Shard sia molto bello, io ho preferito quella dallo Sky Garden forse proprio perchè da lì si può ammirare la bellezza della famosa Scheggia che vale la pena sicuramente visitare.
